12. The Audreys – “Between Last Night and Us”

I feel like I’ve been in a bit of a listening/reviewing slump for the past few days. This album has lifted my spirits substantially.

audreys Between Last Night and Us CD ReviewThese guys burst out of nowhere (well, Adelaide, which is close enough) a few years back and delivered this sensational debut album. This is sensual, evocative and downright cool bluegrass country collection.

Lead songstress Taasha Coates holds a tune like few others and could probably make a phonebook sound sexy. The banjo, violin, brushed snare etc. underneath her vocals are super-mooth without ever being dull or monotonous.

Basically these guys nail a traditional sound in an exciting and well-polished way. They avoid cliche and, in fact, take this genre to some exciting places. They also manage a neat cover, of INXS’s Don’t Change.

As the opening gambit of Banjo and Violin exclaims:

“I’ve gone a bit country since I met you baby. I used to be so rock ‘n’ roll”.

Damn straight. I’m there with them…
